The first blog (#1) of this little “Heritage and History” series of blogs started with a blog about a piping job at Kennesaw Memorial Park, which I posted on AtlantaKilts.com and which got me thinking about the significance of the Civil War history in this Kennesaw/Cheatham Hill area and of the city of Atlanta more generally. After playing at Kennesaw Memorial Park, I drove 1.3 miles to Cheatham Hill Memorial Park, where I have played dozens of memorials since moving to Atlanta in 2000.
While playing many gigs at Cheatham Hill, I’ve taken time to visit the office and read the history of the battle of Cheatham Hill that is posted on the walls of the office. It was fascinating, and I’d like to share that history here:
While the Confederate Army under Gen. Joseph E. Johnson stopped Sherman’s army at Kennesaw and Cheatham Hill, Gen. Sherman just backed off and moved on around toward Atlanta. I’ve read many books and in my opinion Gen. Sherman was a genius of attack while Gen. Johnson was a genius of defense, but had very little genius for attack.
